THIS MONTH'S FEATURED EDUCATOR
“When They Speak, You hear It In Your Own Language”
JONATHAN HARRIS
ZHL Consulting is proud to celebrate Mr. Jonathan Harris as the January 2021, "Featured Educator".
ZHL Consulting has created this program to recognize and celebrate the dedicated educators that go above and beyond to educate the future leaders of the world. Once a month we will choose an educator who has best demonstrated the qualities needed to develop the minds of today’s students.
These monthly Featured Educators are selected with Chengdu as the locus, and radiating out to include Mainland China and the wider Asia Pacific Region. They are recognized on our corporate website, and celebrated on all ZHL Consulting media networks.
Jonathan is currently the PYP Coordinator at Bade Intercultural Academy – Chengdu (BIAC). He is a founding member of the school, and is currently leading the school through its accreditation and authorization for IBPYP status.
Jonathan is recognized for his efforts and willingness to integrate counseling and mental health support in his school. Here is a brief outline of this amazing educator:
Jonathan completed his teaching training in 2008, where he obtained a Post Graduate Degree in Primary Education (with French) at Bristol University (UK) – completing teaching placements in Paris as well as in Bristol. After graduating, Jonathan continued to work in various teaching capacities in Bristol until 2013. In 2013, he began his first international teaching post at King’s College British School of Panama, where he taught in a variety of roles and held key responsibilities: These ranged from class teaching at primary level, teaching French at secondary level, coordinating PE and Math, as well as working directly with Panama’s Ministry of Education (MEDUCA) to develop and provide teacher training workshops and mentorship to newly qualified teachers.
He states:
“International experience in education opened my eyes to a number of different perspectives and has allowed me to develop a deeper sense of what it means to be internationally-minded. Through collaboration, I have developed strengths in my pedagogy and have had the opportunity to share my knowledge and mentor other educators around the world; to help them develop their own strengths and create a growth-mindset within them.”
New opportunities to develop his career and work in an IB curriculum took Jonathan to Dubai, where he was appointed as Grade Level Coordinator for a large team of teachers at Greenfield International School (an IB World School). Jonathan held numerous responsibilities within this role which involved curriculum development, data analysis, performance management and appraisals of staff. He was also an active leader in extracurricular activities including directing theatre productions and coaching badminton and soccer at competition level.
In 2018, Jonathan arrived in Shanghai to teach at the prestigious YK Pao School包玉刚实验学校 where he was appointed as a lead English teacher and co-homeroom teacher. He developed further skills in teaching within a bilingual setting and helped to develop enhanced assessment within the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) that is currently utilized at the school.
Jonathan reflects on his career with words of wisdom:
“Through my learning journey, I regularly reflect on different experiences that have led to the successes in my practice. The key to these successes has come from being open-minded to new and innovative ideas; sharing best practice and ensuring the focus of student-centred learning. By acknowledging student voice and involving them in the planning process, learning has become more meaningful and has led to great progress. Through inquiry, I use creative resources and activities to foster the use of questioning; allowing students to think critically, which enables them to build on their conceptual understanding and transfer new skills across different contexts.”
In addition to his teaching degree, Jonathan also holds a BA (Hons) in Psychology and French, which he obtained from Leicester University (UK). He has travelled extensively around the world and has interests in learning languages, Latin dance, snowboarding, hiking, weight training, boxing and cooking.
To the question, "What next Jonathan? He answers:
“Developing and enriching young minds and educators of the future, to think critically and become internationally-minded, creates positive change for a better world. Being that difference for future generations is what drives and motivates me to be the best teacher, leader and facilitator of learning that I can possibly be.”
ZHL Consulting recognizes and celebrates your work, thank you.
