Teacher Mental Health Literacy
Building Mental Health & Student Support Literacy
As a Teacher, your role is not only to help students achieve academic success, but also to help foster their growth and development including their mental health.
Good Mental Health enables youth to succeed in school and their community. Mental illness most often begins in adolescence but those who work with our students on a daily basis are often unprepared to recognize and understand mental illness and how it impacts young people in the school setting. Effectively addressing this requires student support and mental health literacy. However, teacher education and professional development programs rarely address student support and mental health literacy resulting in teacher candidates. experienced teachers, and teaching assistants who are then at a disadvantage in their work as educators.
ZHL Consulting is able to address this need through our Teacher Mental Health Literacy Program. Whether you are a teacher-in-training, a seasoned educator or teaching assistant, we can provide you with the tools to support your students and your own mental health.
National surveys report that about 70% of teachers identify a need for more knowledge about mental health, mental illness and student support, yet most schools do not have regular and comprehensive mental and student support professional development.. This figure is alarmingly higher in Asia Pacific schools.
ZHL Consulting addresses this gap in service. Teachers-in-training, current teachers, administrators, and teaching assistants can all benefit from more mental health and student support training for faculty. Schools are welcome to invite us in to support their annual professional development and orientation week courses and/or discussions.
